About Our Wine

Walker Bay Vineyards Wine

Birkenhead Estate started planting vines in 2003 with a view to putting in a winery to complement the Brewery.

Our first Harvest was in 2007 when we produced Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. In 2008 we produced the same two white wines along with a red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot which we have named AMESTICA – a Romanian word meaning “amalgam”. This ties in with the shareholders’ Gold Mining interests in Romania, and is an interesting name for a “blend”.

There are 11 ha currently under vine, with 3ha of this coming on stream in 2010. We plan to plant another 10 ha over the next two years and will re-evaluate further planting after that.
